History of Troop 47
Sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Rahway, Troop 47 was first chartered with the Boy Scouts of America on January 18, 1927. Led by Thomas Conway, the 13 original members of the troop met in the gym of the Squire Memorial Community House which adjoins the church. Meetings were held Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.
Since the late '30s, Troop 47 has given back to the Rahway community in many ways. The troop has participated in numerous community events, church and troop social events, Thanksgiving Day food donations, various waste paper and scrap metal drives, and countless garbage cleanups in local area parks.
The troop has enjoyed several national jamborees, local camporees, numerous field trips and day hikes, monthly weekend camping trips, yearly summer camp trips, and statewide bike hikes. Troop 47 has visited places as far as Canada, Great Britain, Holland, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Lichtenstein.
